Super Flumina

Romantic Religious Music from Belgium

Joseph Jongen(1873-1953) wrote Alma Redemptoris Mater in 1895, based on a text of one of the five Marian antiphons which were sung at compline, the last office of the monastic day - a sort of spiritual nightcap.

Alma Redemptoris Mater

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quæ pervia cæli
porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,
surgere qui curat, populo; tu quæ genuisti,
natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore
sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

<< track 10

Mother benign of our redeeming Lord,
Star of the sea and portal of the skies,
Unto thy fallen people help afford -
Fallen, but striving still anew to rise.

Thou who didst once, while wond’ring worlds adored,
Bear thy Creator, Virgin then as now,
O by thy holy joy at Gabriel’s word,
Pity the sinners who before thee bow.
